TOE Magazine Official Launch

Hello friends.

As we speak, a fancy big printer is spitting out copies of the first issue of Theory of Everything.

It's looking good!

Please join us at Desire Books on Tuesday the 29th of May at 7pm for Bonfire at Desire, the open mic night that inspired the birth of TOE Magazine, and the official launch of TOE's first issue. (Directions and details below)

Issue one revolves around the theme of Ritual and the publication itself is a very pretty, limited edition stack of tarot-like cards, each card with its own poem or story or visual work, bound together with a DVD of videos and performances. Fancy! Issues cost $10.

Warm wishes and wet kisses,
The TOE Editorial Division

Submission guidelines for TOE Magazine Issue 1: Ritual

Theory Of Everything Submission Guidelines

General Guidelines:

- The copyright of all works must be held by the person making the submission.
- The theme is open to interpretation, but works are most likely to be included if they respond directly to the theme (Issue 1: RITUAL).
- Don't send us precious original copies of anything; submissions won't be returned!

Image based submissions:

- Try not to send us big image files via email, as our server is very puny and prone to fainting. Feel free to provide links to Flickr or file hosting services with zipped folders containing your image(s).
- Should be submitted as a digital file (original artworks will not be accepted). Don't send us precious only copies of anything, submissions won't be returned.
- Should work as a 12x12cm print. They can be larger, but they will be scaled down to 12cm x12cm, so details may disappear!
- Files must be 300 dpi @12x12cm. We will do our best colour-wise, remember that we are still learning!
- Submissions can be made via CD-ROM, either via Australia Post or in person in the shop (Desire Books, 3/3 Whistler Street, Manly, NSW).

Text-based submissions

- For this issue, we're focusing on poetry and short (short! short!) fiction. Try to keep it under 700 words. This will probably change in later issues, but the particular format we've decided on for our first issue will lend itself most easily to brevity.
- Submissions can be made via email (toemagazine@desirebooks.com.au), or via cd-rom, delivered either by Australia Post or in person at the shop (Desire Books, 3/3 Whistler Street, Manly, NSW).
- Don't send us precious original copies of anything; submissions won't be returned!

Performance-based submissions

The magazine will have a DVD included, so performance submissions are most welcome! By performance we mean: poetry, music, live art, and anything else that pops into your pretty, little head. Surprise us!

Overall performance guidelines are as follows:

- Don't send us precious original copies of anything; submissions won't be returned!
- Performances should be under three minutes. Ish. Do your best. We understand that sometimes these things get out of hand.
- We have this crazy idea that we want all the performances to occur behind masks or half-masks, in keeping with the Ritual theme. We'll be making some masks, but feel free to incorporate this idea into your proposed performances and to choose or make masks of your own in which to perform.

*for those who will be in the Sydney area in early April, the guidelines are as follows*
- Send us any one of the following: a DVD, a link to the file on a file hosting service, or a vimeo.com link (make sure when you upload your video to vimeo.com that you check the box labelled "ALLOW OTHER PEOPLE TO DOWNLOAD THE SOURCE VIDEO"). This submission is your proposed performance work. THIS WILL NOT BE THE FINAL PUBLISHED FORMAT. We intend to record as many performances as we can, live, in a TBA location, for conceptual and aesthetic consistency.

*for those who won't be in Sydney in early April, the submission guidelines are as follows*
- Please send us any one of the following: a DVD, a link to the file on a file hosting service, or a vimeo.com link (make sure when you upload your video to vimeo.com that you check the box labelled "ALLOW OTHER PEOPLE TO DOWNLOAD THE SOURCE VIDEO"). Since we won't be able to record your performance live, it would be especially lovely if you could incorporate a mask into your performance, for conceptual and aesthetic consistency.

IF YOU HAVE ANY QUESTIONS (AESTHETIC, PHILOSOPHICAL AND TECHNICAL) PLEASE FEEL FREE TO CONTACT US FOR HELP AND/OR SUPPORT!

And finally, please don't be discouraged if we're unable to include your submission in this issue. It doesn't mean that we don't like your stuff; other factors such as relevance to the theme, format and space may come into play. So, please submit again for the next issue!

Issue 1: Ritual. Call for Submissions.

Issue 1: Ritual

Deadline: Tuesday 27th of March, 2012

T.O.E. Magazine is a new multimedia publication that is not really a magazine, not entirely a DVD and not at all a toe. It's a little care package from the Mysterious Machinery of our Collective Secret Heart. It's an outgrowth of the super-wonderful and hyper-eclectic Bonfire nights, held at the Desire Books shop in Manly, Australia.

We're going to release an issue every three or four months, depending on the size and complexity of the issue. We'll be regularly asking for submissions.

We are calling out to the world for its poetry, short fiction and non-fiction, video, performance (music, poetry, live art) and image-based work on the topic of Ritual.

The format of the first issue will be a novelty; no regular magazine with ye olde covers and pages here! Consequently, there will be specific submission requirements that will be posted here by the 17th of February. Check back soon.

We will also be recording performance-based works for a DVD that will be included with issue one. Those of your located in Sydney can come by and have their song/poem/interpretive dance/card trick/etc video recorded in our secret fancy location!

We're shaking with excitement! We want to see your pretty little private stuff! Bring it!
